Proffered by Darth Reptitious (now better known as Killing Time or KT) at the Order back in 2013... This is a breathing/active meditation exercise I used to assist me in mastering my fear of flying. This simple breathing exercise is called 4x4 breathing. 1) Take in a deep slow breath that takes 4 seconds to complete. 2) Hold the air in your lungs for a count of 4 seconds. 3) Slowly expel the air out of your lungs so that it takes 4 seconds to complete. 4) Hold your lungs empty for a count of 4 seconds. Repeat cycle for as long as necessary. This exercise is extremely useful in mastering fear situations and with practice becomes automatic (no zoning out or loss of focus). Other benefits include increasing lung strength and capacity (which is useful to me as I am an ex smoker), and using 4x2 breathing variation (same as above but without steps 2 & 4) to aid you in switching off for sleep. Try it. Anyone feel like trying it out? See any purpose (or believe it's a pointless exercise)? Feel free to judge.

I'm always looking for new ways, and purposes for meditating. I'll definitely try this out, and see if it holds any benefit.

My friend used to have panic attacks, and lot's of people told him to make this practice when the attack comes, and it will help to make things easier. The only difference was that he had to do it with 6 seconds of each. I had panic attacks only a few times, so I couldn't try this, but I know when I'm anxious, or having paranoid "attacks", then it's not works for me, because I totally lose my consciousness, but maybe it's just a time and I will learn how to control it.

As someone who engages in breathing practice, this box breathing is deeply helpful and can actually be used as a thought / emotion stopping device. As the person above me mentioned, if you need more time for holds and breaths, then it is perfectly normal to do so.
