Metaphysics has the role in the Dark path that each student decides it will. Many darksiders brush on the subject only lightly during their studies, and some may choose to make it a focus point. One of the difficulties presented in either case is that the Dark path focuses on cutting away the fluff and circumstance and finding the real truth in any matter. Anyone who’s attempted picking up a book related to spirituality or magick lately knows that finding the real substance among personal belief and speculation can be a challenge.
How does one go about building real skills, intuitively?
I’m sure a number of the people reading this have had type of experience with their foresight - and those people in particular can appreciate how hard it can be to sharpen those skills into anything relatively controllable and trustworthy. Intuition stems from our own stream of consciousness, a stream which most people have learned to tune out of their lives. To learn to listen to it again requires getting rid of some of that daily output and letting your consciousness do what it does best: ramble around aimlessly.
For this exercise, you’ll need a tape recorder. In a pinch, you can also have an open minded friend taking notes, or take notes yourself in shorthand. Taping yourself tends to be less distracting, however. Get yourself in a nice quiet room, in a position that’s comfortable. The key is to eliminate whatever distractions you can.
Turn on your recorder, and start to talk. Whatever is on your mind, say so.
If your toe itches, say so. If the neighbor’s dog is barking incessantly, say so. If you feel like an idiot laying in your room talking to a tape recorder, feel free to add that too. As you speak, you should slowly get rid of the superficial things that are on your mind. Perhaps your observations will move from the physical, to the mental- “I really felt depressed today after work..” “I’m worried about the upcoming exam.” The idea is to start letting your thoughts flow, to speak your mind as the thoughts come to you. This serves as a terrific way to rant about your day, and learn more about your own thought processes and psyche. It’s main purpose, however, is to get you used to listening to the subtle thoughts and emotions that you would normally brush over.
You may find yourself saying or feeling things you don’t quite understand. Keep recording. A few days later, go back and see what your intuition had been telling you. What did you guess right about? Did certain things strike you more powerfully as accurate? What were you able to make yourself more aware of? A great deal of what you discover may not be intuitively discovered at all: sometimes thinking aloud for a while can allow us to use reason to find the most likely chain of events, or the best course of action. This serves the same basic purpose, and is even more accurate. For the student with little interest in this subject area, this is a useful skill to work on. For those looking to expand more on the topic, it’s a vital building block. Intuition plays a part not only in magick and related fields, but in awareness training, fighting, business and our daily grind. However, it does little good in small and sporadic doses. A horse is no good to a man, until he learns to ride on it’s back.
